Biography: Congressman
Ken Calvert (CA-44)

Congressman Ken Calvert, (CA-44)
Ken Calvert, a lifelong resident of Riverside County and 17-year small business owner in the restaurant and real estate industries, represents the 44th Congressional District of southern California. Calvert was born on June 8, 1953 and attended neighborhood public schools, graduating from Corona High School in 1971. He attended two years at Chaffey College, in Alta Loma, and then enrolled at San Diego State University, where he graduated in 1975 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics. Ken is a Protestant and is involved in several local community volunteer organizations.
The 44th District is one of the most diverse, encompassing western Riverside County including Riverside, Corona, Norco and Jurupa; and parts of Orange County including San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano.
Calvert was first elected to serve the 43rd District in 1992, however as a result of re-districting the 43rd District was renamed in 2002. Congressman Calvert now represents California's 44th Congressional District, while maintaining representation of some of the old 43rd's largest cities. During his freshman term, Calvert served as an active Member of the Resources Committee and Science Committee. The next two years in office Calvert's ability to work in a bipartisan fashion was rewarded with the Chairmanship of the Energy and Mineral Subcommittee on the Resources Committee. While unusual for a sophomore Member to be given a Chairmanship after only one term in Congress, Calvert served on two other Committees: maintaining his seat on the Science Committee and gaining a seat on the Agriculture Committee. Over the years his committee assignments enabled him to address issues critical to Riverside County, California and the nation, issues such as the Endangered Species Act, agriculture, energy, water and much more. In the 105th and 106th Congress, Rep. Calvert was Chairman of the Science Subcommittee on Energy and the Environment where he worked on alternative energy and clean air issues. In 2001 (107th Congress) Calvert was selected to serve on the House Armed Services Committee.
In 1996, Calvert authored legislation that created E-Verify, the only tool available to employers to check the veracity of a name and Social Security number given on an I-9 form for employment. In 1995 Rep. Calvert toured the southern border and a Border Patrol agent remarked on the job magnet that brings hundreds of thousands of people illegally to the United States. Rep. Calvert, a former small business owner and employer, concluded that the best and quickest way to enable employers to check the legal status of newly hired employees was to set up a system that could check the name against the Social Security number. Since the decade it was created, E-Verify has been made mandatory in two states (Arizona and Mississippi) and as of July 2009 it serves over 130,000 employers nationwide. Congressman Calvert has introduced legislation in the 111th Congress that would make employment verification mandatory over a period of seven years.

Biography: Riverside County Supervisor
John J. Benoit District 4

Supervisor John J. Benoit
Supervisor John J. Benoit was appointed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Nov. 4, 2009 to the Riverside County Board of Supervisors, replacing the late Roy Wilson in representing the County’s sprawling 4th District.
“As an experienced elected official and former public safety officer, John J. Benoit has a proven history of dedicated public service and is absolutely the best person to till this important position,” Governor Schwarzenegger said. “I have no doubt that John will continue to promote the interests of the people in Riverside County to the best of his ability in this new role.”
Supervisor Benoit, in fact, enjoyed a distinguished career in public service prior to being appointed by the Governor to his current position.
Voters selected John to represent them in the 64th District in the California State Assembly from 2002-2008 and he was subsequently endorsed by the residents of the 37th District in the State Senate as he won election to that post in November 2008.
A veteran of 31 years in law enforcement, John also served on the Desert Sands School Board and was actively involved in community service before his service in the State Legislature. Starting as a cadet with the Corona Police Department in 1971, he joined the California Highway Patrol in 1973, working in L.A., Sacramento and Bakersfield before being assigned as the Indio Area Commander in 1988. He also attended the FBI National Academy and served as a Volunteer Fire Captain with the Sunset-Whitney Fire Department.
John's legislative priorities have included budget reform, job creation, public safety, and education. His legislative successes in child care safety were featured on “The Montel Williams Show,” a nationally syndicated talk show. A strong fiscal conservative, John is nevertheless known for his ability to reach effectively across the aisle, a talent that allowed him to have forty pieces of legislation signed into law. He was awarded the Outstanding Legislator of the Year by the California School Boards Association, the School Transportation Coalition, the California Rifle and Pistol Association and the California Narcotics Officers’ Association.
A member and Past President of both the United Way of the Desert and Indio Rotary, John's hobbies include recreational reading and taking to the skies as a commercial, instrument rated pilot.
John earned a BS degree in Public Safety at Cal State Los Angeles, and a Master's in Public Administration at Cal State San Bernardino. Having participated in language immersion programs in Mexico and Costa Rica, he frequently communicated legislative principles to the Spanish-language media, and his bilingual skills will be invaluable to his work in the County of Riverside’s Fourth District.
John and his wife Sheryl married in 1978. They are committed parishioners of Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. They have a daughter Sarah and son Benjamin, who, together with his wife Norma, have blessed them with their granddaughter, Abrielle Benoit.
